Review of I Am Ocilla:

Genre: Fantasy

Book Description: "Open your heart and mind to the simplicity and complexity of a name. I know only my name. Beyond that is confusion, a void where fantasy and reality swirl together. Fairies, Giants, Elves, Dwarves, ancient Keepers, and...Dragons? A dark soul threatens the Five Kingdoms, but I am powerless to stand against it, overwhelmed by phantom memories, broken and lost. Somehow, I must live. I must find my purpose. There are friends to love and battles to fight. I know my name. Perhaps that is enough. I am Ocilla. This is my story."

First, what I didn't like: The story is written in the first-person present point of view. I really don't like this viewpoint (possibly just because most of the books I've read are in third-person) and it's really hard to pull off convincingly. That said, the author did a really good job of it. After a few chapters, I didn't notice the viewpoint anymore. I love the characters (You'll notice that characters are one of the main things that sell me on a book...) especially Alexander... okay, I just love cats. I also like how the main character (Ocillia) tries to take a positive attitude and never gives up.

Review of Remnant in the Stars | Review of Mindstorm: Parley at Ologo

Genre: Science-Fiction

Book Description:

I really enjoyed reading Remnant in the Stars. It's one of those books that reminds me why I like science fiction. The book is set in a future universe with spaceships, aliens, and bad guys, and it has a wonderful sense of adventure. The story is primarily about Sora, an self-outcast alien who's daughter has gone missing, but it has a great ensemble cast whose characters are all fleshed out (naturally, some get more character development than others, but there's a nice balance.) The rest of the cast of main characters include Kirsten, a pilot who's having trouble with her replacement arm; Peter, the ex-military gunner; Derek, the freelance captain who's always dreamed of having his own ship; Janice, the engineer with a love for puns; and Vince the doctor. The book feels similar to a combination of Han Solo (and Chewie and the Falcon) and Cowboy Bebop, with a storyline that's serious but still humorous at the same time. I love it, and want more in the series!

Review of The Windrider Saga:

Book Description:

Captain Vinyanel Ecleriast isn't your typical hero, but he isn't the cookie-cutter anti-hero either. He's just a soldier trying to do his job, when a bunch of annoying prophesy stuff is forced on him. He's a good guy at heart, but he wants to do things his way, often to the chagrin of the other characters. In this way, he reminds me a little of Jordan the Barbarian from Xanth. Also, he befriends a frost dragon, Magistrin, who gets him out of all kinds of scrapes. Their relationship is less typical fantasy dragon, and more Pernese dragon, and that's always a good thing.
The way the wording in the book is used is both my least favorite, and most favorite thing about the writing. It has a different cadence and word choice... it's a little different than modern speech, and took about a page to get used to, but it quickly faded to the background and really becomes part of the setting. It feels like you're in a different culture, not just reading a story about a different culture using modern words and phrasing. More importantly, it's not overdone, and doesn't overwhelm the story.
I really liked the books, and can't wait to see what happens to these characters next.
